Conversion into (and out of) Portable Document Format (PDF)
Have you ever received an electronic document that you couldn’t open because you didn’t have the ‘right’ software on your computer? or sent a document to someone, only to find out that they couldn’t open it. Likewise, do you ever need to send an electronic document to a number of people, a form of some sort perhaps, or a carefully laid out glossy prospectus, that needs to look and ‘act’ exactly the same for all recipients? Are there security considerations – the need for a password to open; a need to prevent alteration, copying or printing – with your documents? How about combining output from several sources (or several different programmes) into a single document for distribution?
Portable Document Format (PDF) is a platform and (authoring) software independent format in which the ‘look and feel’ of the original document, including fonts, graphics and layout, is retained across viewing platforms regardless of settings or fonts. The only thing required on recipient machines is a PDF reader application (nowadays found on most computers).
TPE is able to offer conversion of documents into PDF from Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Access (reports), Epub, HTML and Text. For other formats, within reason, if we can display and print it TPE can most likely convert it to PDF. We also have the software necessary to create ‘merged’ PDFs from different base documents or formats.
Sometimes, of course you may wish to extract text or graphics from a PDF document or convert it ‘back’ to a more editable format. TPE can help you out there too.
The PDF format was developed by Adobe. The original, and still the ‘gold standard’, PDF reader is the Adobe Reader which is available as a free download at
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html . Other, third party readers are available elsewhere on the Internet and at retail outlets. Because PDF documents have become so common there would be very few modern computers that do not have a PDF reader (most likely Adobe Reader) installed as part of their ‘out of the box’ software suite. Similarly, net-books, tablets and smart-phones generally include a PDF reader.
It is possible, with the right software, to edit the content of PDF files almost to the same extent as can be achieved in the originating programme (i.e. Word, Excel etc). However, this type of software is not generally found on home or small business computers due to its specialisation and cost. TPE has the software necessary to carry out these tasks.
